The debut album North of the improvising trio New Borders is out!
North features Sámi artists Viktor Bomstad and Karin Nelson.
New Borders was founded in Gothenburg in 2021 by the British trumpetist Ben Rodney, Swedish saxophonist Adrian Åsling Sellius and Finnish Antti Lähdesmäki, who in this band plays the church organ. The unorthodox instrumentation comes with challenges, but simultaneously showed way to the concept of the album:
Viktor Bomstad is a guitarist originally from Tromsø, who currently holds the unique position as a municipal musician specialized in joik in the North of Norway. On the jazz- and improvised scene Bomstad is known from his band Sex Magick Wizards. His solo album Sámi Noise combines the different traditions of his; in addition he has researched joik as a starting point for improvisation at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
Karin Nelson was born in Skellefteå in the far north of Sweden, and currently is the professor in organ and church music at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and in organ at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg. She is a specialist in the improvisation tradition of the organ, and her numerous recordings include co-operations with eminent improvisers as well as classical repertoire.
On this album, the organist stands out as a vocalist and composer as well: side B of North features “Gillesnuolen Vuöllie” – an original joik written by Nelson.
The production of North has been supported by Kulturrådet in Sweden, the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural fund and the Oslo diocese of the Norwegian Church.
